Repository Overview: Android Emulator Docker Environment

This repository provides Docker images tailored for Android development environments. It includes configurations for emulation (including AVD and Android SDK tools) and light versions with essential platform tools for device interfacing.

Available Tags

• latest: Full Android emulator image, including the AVD manager and SDK tools to emulate Android devices. This tag requires the host system to have an active accelerator or a valid hypervisor to optimize emulation performance.

  • Running on GCE: If you’re using this image on Google Compute Engine (GCE), you’ll need to enable the hypervisor for optimal performance. Follow this https://cloud.google.com/compute/docs/instances/nested-virtualization/enabling#confirm_that_nested_virtualization_is_enabled_on_the_vm for instructions on configuring GCE to support the necessary virtualization.

• amd64-light: A minimal image containing only platform tools, such as adb (Android Debug Bridge), allowing users to interface with external devices. This image is lightweight and does not include emulation capabilities, making it suitable for basic operations like device communication or testing on physical devices.

Requirements

• For latest tag:

  • Host Requirements: Ensure your host system has an active accelerator (like Intel HAXM or KVM) or a compatible hypervisor to support the Android emulator.
  • Docker Requirements: The image assumes you’re running on amd64 architecture, specifically configured for Debian-based systems.

• For amd64-light tag:

  • No special requirements other than Docker support on an amd64 architecture. This tag is lightweight and can operate on systems without additional emulation support.

Usage Instructions

• Pull the Docker Image:

bash
# Full emulator setup
docker pull hunter953/android-emulator:latest

# Lightweight setup with adb only
docker pull hunter953/android-emulator:amd64-light

• Run the Docker container:

bash
# For the latest image with emulator capabilities
docker run -it --rm --privileged hunter953/android-emulator:latest

# For the lightweight image with adb-only tools
adb tcpip 5555 && docker run -it --network="host" --rm -v ~/.android:/root/.android -v $(pwd)/flows:/root/flows -v $(pwd)/logs:/root/logs hunter953/android-emulator:amd64-light

• Usage:
  • For latest:

  bash
  # Start the emulator
  emulator -avd end2end -no-window -no-audio -no-snapshot-save
  
  # Check connected devices
  adb devices
  

  • For amd64-light:

  bash
  # Restart adb server and connect to the host machine
  adb kill-server
  adb start-server
  adb tcpip 5555
  
  # Check connected devices
  adb devices
  

Environment Variables

• latest: Set to /usr/local/android-sdk, where all SDK and platform tools are installed.
• PATH: Includes paths for command-line tools, platform tools, and emulator ***aries, enabling seamless access within the container.

Installed Tools

• Common Tools:
  • curl, wget, nano, openjdk-17-jdk, unzip, python3, python3-venv for basic functionalities.
• Android Development Tools:
  • Platform tools: adb and other utilities for device management.
  • Maestro: A end-to-end testing tool for Android applications.
  • Emulator and SDK Tools (latest tag only): Provides access to the Android Virtual Device (AVD) manager and emulator ***aries.
