Docker image for Elasticsearch 6.8

This is an improved Elasticsearch 6.8 image created by MyParcel because the official image doesn't fulfill our requirements, nor does it meet our security and quality standards.

Features

• Built using the Ubuntu LTS base image instead of CentOS 7.
• Uses OpenJDK 8 as per Elastic's own recommendations.
• Image size reduced by half compared to the official Elasticsearch images.
• Builds available for both amd64 and arm64 architectures.
• Can be used as a drop-in replacement for the official Elasticsearch image.
• Improved security:
  • Runs the complete container as the unprivileged elasticsearch user.
  • Elasticsearch' working directory, /usr/share/elasticsearch, and below are not writable by the elasticsearch user except where it is required for proper functioning.
  • The elasticsearch user now has a bespoke home dir, instead of the working directory (/usr/share/elasticsearch).
  • Yes, in case you're wondering, the basic security measures above are not applied in the official images. I don't know who writes their Dockerfiles, but I don't recommend you run their official images in a production environment.

The commands below are intended for deploying in a development context only. For production installation and configuration, see Install Elasticsearch with Docker.

Running in Development Mode

Create user defined network (useful for connecting to other services attached to the same network (e.g. Kibana)):

docker network create somenetwork

Run Elasticsearch:

  --detach \
  --env     "discovery.type=single-node" \
  --name    elasticsearch \
  --net     somenetwork \
  --publish 9200:9200 \
